Update on the fatal shooting in 29 Hobart
A few days ago, a police standoff occurred at 29 Hobart, San Mateo resulting in 2 fatalities. The police released the shooter’s identity as Raymond Gee of Oakland a couple days ago, and they say that he has been stalking the slain woman for weeks on the internet and in real life. Some articles say that Raymond pursued Loan Kim Nguyen because she was a strikingly beautiful former beauty contestant. Now there is a a new article today that says the Gee family believes that Raymond Gee went to the house to collect a debt because the stalking story didn’t seem to make too much sense.
The story is getting a bit more convoluted now, but right now I believe the debt angle more than the stalking angle from what is being reported. First, the family was clearly in financial trouble. A family friend reported that Loan Kim Nguyen had to take a job at a high end club to help out with the finances. The media also reported that the husband works as a loan officer at Wachovia, which is a troubled bank that is being purchased by Wells Fargo. They bought their home for 1.198 million just last year, and even with 20% down it would be a jumbo loan and their PITI probably topped $8000 a month. Perhaps it was more affordable in the boom times but now they are strapped and that’s why the house has been on the market for about 2 months at the time of the incident. Next, the police say that Loan Kim Nguyen met Raymond Gee in the club she worked at. That may be true, but it really sounds like Raymond Gee is not one of those high rolling businessmen that the club caters to. So I’m guessing that Gee was probably a hired henchman sent to collect on some debts since he is a small time criminal doing probation.
The home is now understandably off the market since it is officially a crime scene, but it probably needs to be sold or it could go into foreclosure if the family can no longer support payments. The property tax on the home will be delinquent in a week according to San Mateo Tax Collector’s website. I hope the police can find the truth in this case because two very young people died and two little kids lost their mom. If the cause of their deaths is really financial rather than romantic, then the home indirectly contributed to their deaths and I don’t think any Asian person would ever buy the house because it would be considered cursed.
Update: Full story from San Mateo police. Neither deaths were caused by police.
If you would like to help the family of Loan Kim Nguyen financially, here is her memorial website.

Dear Author,
Have you no shame to write about someone that just didnt died in such a horrific manner but a very young mother, a wife and foremost a very good friend to many did an amazing selfless act…by not only risking but sacraficing her very own life to save her children. How dare you put her private life under a microscope for strangers to read. Everything that has happened has been noneless…just pure speculation. Please everyone out there aside from her family, close friends and the detectives working this case…stop with the whispers and the assumptions…stop slandering her memory…she was a cocktail waitress working to support her family and set to graduate from the university of Pacific on Dec. 19th. For all the curious readers out there…this is it …nothing more…she was a brave and a curageous individual, Kim’s life was cut way too short and will be missed each and everyday. I have the privilage to say that I knew her and she was someone that always lit the up the room w/her smile and always had something nice to say about everyone~
Dear anonymous,
Most of what I wrote is linked from other articles published by Mercury Times and San Francisco Chronicle. I don’t think I slandered her in anyway. I believe that she was a courageous individual in saving her children, but I think the police should investigate what really happened instead of just saying that the shooter was a crazy guy that stalked her. A lot of stuff about this case doesn’t make too much sense and the financial aspect needs to be investigated. I just want to know the truth of what exactly happened, and I think the family and friends of both individuals that perished wants the same thing.
I’m sorry that you lost a friend.
Its not so much that ur inquiring about what happenend. Its the fact that your speculating along w/everyone else. Its the fact that your stating her family was in financial trouble, its the fact that your speaking about her personal life all together. I havent read that they were in financial trouble anywhere aside from they’re house being on the market and kim working part time. Your website is suppose to be about Real Estate not people’s personal lives that should remain personal. Its sad that you went as far as joking or maybe you were serious that now her house may be cursed and would be undesirable to asians. Im not going to respond after this. Your trying to defend yourself when indeed, no need too..Your information on the shooting speaks for itself. I find it pretty offensive that your website is allegedly an update on the real estate market when its clearly not.
Perhaps you should read the Mercury Times article again:

“Nguyen and husband Dennis Quan married about four years ago and moved to San Mateo, so they could be closer to his job as a loan officer at a Wachovia Bank branch in San Jose, friends said. But financial difficulties forced Nguyen to work part time for a company that manages nightclubs, said Janey Luu of San Jose, a close friend.”
The paper said that they had financial difficulties according to a family friend. I didn’t write these articles in the newspaper. If you are truly offended that people are discussing this case, then why don’t you tell the newspapers to stop writing about it? It’s news, and the web is a public forum for discussion. I’m sorry you find it offensive, but I am just stating an opinion, and you are free to state your opinions, too.
As to real estate, this is a website about San Mateo Home Sellers in Trouble, and I chronicle homes that are selling at or below their last sale price in the last few years, and 29 Hobart does qualify. I don’t think I wrote anything personal about the owner other than what is in the public records and what is in the news. As to the home being undesirable to Asians in the future, I am actually serious about that. It would be hard to market the home after this incident.
My point exactly…Your website is about homes…not to speculate about people’s personal lives. You are not the media, at least w/ the dia …its expected…you are indeed entitled to your opinion but you should keep them to yourself, like you said you are just acitizen of San mateo not the media. I hope you feel good about yourself. you have no idea who kim is yet …yet you speak of her nlike you do. Stick to what your website is about “Homes”, that’s all I have to say.

your insinuations are unfounded. Mercury News is a horrible source trying to sensationalize and make something out of nothing.
That reporter Jessica Berstein contacted me on facebook under the guise that she wanted to write a nice piece about Kim all the while printing malicious lies.
Raymond Gee was psycho and suicideal, what he did was atrocious.
The author’s view is what I had in mind also. Something fishy about the family’s financial situation but my heart goes out to the family especially the 2 kids.
So I bet you two feel bad now that you guys know the real story on how she was murdered not due to fianacial problems but due to an obsessed stalker. btw-the author has no right to write about kim…this site is allegedly about chronicling homes that are in trouble..the site is not here to speculate on horrific tragedies. If your here to talk about the home on 29 hobart then discuss that- dont speculate on the private lives of the people that live there or in any of the other homes.
Clearly the author has a point. As soon as I saw this story I knew something did not smell right. Clearly if he was stalking her, why would he be beating her? Why would she have the time to text her husband? She never reported the stalking? Something does not smell right with the accounts of the newspaper. I think there is more to this story. Its too bad that two kids lost their mother and someone lost their daughter and wife.
I am happy that some people have enough common sense to not always believe an unbelievable story.
unfortunately the San Mateo PD has closed the case. I still think it’s fishy, but I’m afraid there won’t be any more information.
